Route 34 Reconstruction – State Project #36-184

Project 36-184

PROJECT LOCATION:
The Route 34 (Main Street) reconstruction project is located in downtown Derby’s commercial district.  It extends from Bridge Street to Ausonio Drive / Route 8 northbound On-Ramp with a total length of 2,340 feet. Main Street is intersected from the north by a series of closely-spaced urban side streets: Bridge Street, Olivia Street, Elizabeth Street, Minerva Street, Caroline Street, Water Street and Ausonio Street. The total length of work on the side streets is 1,342 feet. All of the intersections are signalized except for the Route 34 intersections with Minerva Street and Caroline Street.
PURPOSE OF PROJECT:
The purpose of the project is to improve existing conditions which currently result in traffic backups at key intersections. The goal is to improve roadway capacity to meet the existing high traffic volumes and also the anticipated traffic demands on Route 34 (Main Street) resulting from future land use in downtown Derby.  The widening of the road and addition of travel lanes will improve capacity while a median, narrow and clearly marked lane widths, on-street parking, streetscape features and improved traffic control is intended to clearly channelize and slow traffic down, and thus improve safety while maintaining the downtown feel of this section of Main Street.
DESCRIPTION OF PROJECT:

Main Street will be widened to accommodate two through lanes in each direction between Bridge Street intersection and Ansonio Drive intersection. Additional turning lanes will be provided on Main Street at the intersections of Minerva Street and Water Street. On-street parking will be provided on both sides of Main Street between Elizabeth Street and Water Street / Factory Street and an adjacent parking lot is proposed between Bridge Street and Elizabeth Street on the south side of Main Street. Elizabeth Street is proposed to be converted to a one-way street in the southbound direction and Minerva Street to be converted to a one-way street in the northbound direction. Other additional improvements within the project limits are: a new drainage system, wider concrete sidewalks, granite stone curbing, raised median islands, streetscape features all-new traffic signals and installation of decorative light fixtures.
